6 The largest archaeological sites with petroglyphs
The petroglyphs and rock carvings that have been preserved in the Altai region are a clear indication of the long process of cultural development among the local peoples, including hunters, herders, and nomads. The most significant examples can be found in the following areas: Grotto Kuylo, Grotto Kuyus, Yelangash, Bichiktu-Boom, Kalbak-Tash, and the Adyr-Kan sanctuary.
Katun River
It is one of the largest rivers in Western Siberia. The name comes from the Altai word "kadyn" (meaning "mistress"). The river originates from the Gebler Glacier at the foot of Mount Belukha on the southern slope of the Katun Range. It flows through the Altai Republic and the Altai Territory. When it merges with the Biya River, it forms the Ob River, one of the largest rivers in Eurasia. Interestingly, almost the entire Katun River basin is located in mountainous terrain.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
The list includes three sections of the Altai Mountains:
- Altai Nature Reserve and the Buffer Zone of Lake Teletskoye
- Katunsky Nature Reserve and the Belukha Mountain Buffer Zone
- Ukok Plateau
The territories were chosen due to their full representation of all alpine vegetation zones in Siberia and their importance for the conservation of rare animal species.
